Dental Bridges

A bridge, by definition, is a link or connection between two permanent structures. A dental bridge is very similar in that it attaches to the natural teeth on either side of a gap. The bridge replaces missing teeth, closing the gap and restoring your smile.

Bridges are often constructed of gold or other metal foundations with porcelain fused to the foundation.

Replacing missing teeth can improve your appearance, health, and self confidence. Likewise you avoid the detrimental affects of tooth loss including impacts to the way you eat, the way you speak, the shape of your face, and tooth alignment..

Types of Bridges

There are three main types of bridges:

  • Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge and are made of either porcelain fused to metal or ceramics.
Crowns are created for the teeth on either side of the missing tooth and a pontic (false tooth) is placed in between.
  • Cantilever bridges are used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth or teeth.
  • Maryland bonded bridges are made of gums and porcelain teeth supported by a metal framework. Metal wings on each side of the bridge are bonded to your existing teeth. This bridge type is sometimes called a resin-bonded bridge or a Maryland bridge.

How It's Done...

The natural teeth bordering your missing teeth are shaped so that the ends of the bridge fit comfortably on each one. Next an impression is taken of the area. The impression is sent to our lab where your new restoration is crafted. While this new tooth is created, we provide you with a temporary restoration. Our temporary restorations resemble your natural teeth so that you can continue with your daily life without worrying about a missing or unattractive tooth.

During your second visit to the office, we proceed with the placement of your final restoration. The bridge is fitted into your mouth. We make every effort to ensure that the new bridge feels exactly like your natural teeth. The final step in the process is to cement the bridge into your mouth, leaving you with a beautifully restored smile.

How Long Do They Last?
The answer to this question is that it's not so easy to predict. The length of time your bridge lasts depends on many factors. These factors include how well the bridge is maintained, the teeth bridged, the condition of the supporting teeth, the health of the gums and associated structures, the dietary habits of the wearer, the material used in fabrication of the bridge, and so on. Because of the many variables that must be considered it is difficult to determine how many years a bridge might last.
